The movies , as well as other forms of art and expression, are capable of producing emotions, provoking thought, laughter, providing inspiration, and more. I recently wrote about how much I loved the movie Juno...I found this exchange particularly meaningful ...it contains so much...
JUNO: I just need to know if it's possible for two people to stay happy together forever, or at least for a few years.
Mac MacGuff: It's not easy, that's for sure. Now, I may not have the best track record in the world, but I have been with your stepmother for 10 years now and I'm proud to say that we're very happy.
[Juno nods]
Mac MacGuff: In my opinion, the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you, the right person will still think the sun shines out your a$$. That's the kind of person that's worth sticking with.
He was a warm character, and I loved the way he stuck with Juno, supporting without criticizing...My dog roxy is like that...she thinks I'm the best now mater what even in my monkey pj's
a cool guy is Mac Guff!

I saw the movie as well and we loved it. There was so much honesty and truth in it and no judgement. Some really good lessons in there as well. There were all ages in the theatre with us and we're all better off for having seen it.
Movies ARE getting better, or am I selecting better ones? Anyone seen No Country For Old Men? Any comments?
I saw "No Country" a couple of months ago. It is violent and bloody. I usually can't sit through this stuff (one couple actually walked out) but the story was riviting. The winner of the Oscar (best supporting actor) deserved it for sure. The end kind of left me saying HUH??? I have read a few books by McCormick, (All the Pretty Horses, ect..) He is an engaging writer. I never heard of this book. I put it on my future reading list as I want to see how that ends. I will stop here, I don't want to ruin the story for those who want to see it. Just don't expect anything warm and fuzzy.
I really liked this movie as well, Juno had such an acerbic wit, How bout this comment "well, like I'd give it to you now, but it's not developed and probably looks like a little sea monkey..." She has a way of being direct that is funny and always gets her point across :) Her comment makes you laugh at the same time you realize that she is right there with the reality of the "sea monkey" er I mean situation! :)
Some movies are getting better, Holly wood has a way to go
though...I haven't seen "No Country for Old Men"
Did you like it?
One I saw recently that I am still chuckling over, was "Still Crazy" Billy Knightly was one of the aging rockers getting together for a reunion tour of their band. Lots of life, laughs, and reality, appealing to the "boomer's" who are getting older...Any one see this one... It's a 10 in my book!

I have not seen either of them, but I did see a movie recently called "thank you for smoking" , which is about a tobacco lobbyist, and I thought it was very clever. It turns out it was Directed by Jason Reitman , who also directed Juno.
For a great TV series , try catching the reruns on HBO of "Flight of the Conchords" . One of the funniest shows I have seen in a long time.
Strange fruit is the fictional 70's band that the movie is about, the movie starts with a scene from an early rock concert complete with thousands of screaming fans, a huge outside concert venue with movie screens on either side of the stage. Hughie, a roadie, played by Billy Connoly, is narrating; "History teaches us that men behave wisely once they've exhausted all other alternatives." - Hughie's statements are made in his rich Scottish bough, he is an aging rocker with long gray hair and cynical sense of humor...As the first scene unfolds, you can see the egos, arguments taking place while the group of 5 band members scrambles to get on stage for the show...it is obvious that all is not well between the members. The music starts with the 70's roar of rock and screaming fans while the sky lights up with thunder and lightning!
The lightning strikes the mike, shorting the amps and speakers...the bands, already hanging by a thread breaks up....Fast forward to the 90's in a Spanish island town, where Tony Costello, ( Stephan Rea) is recognized by the son of the promoter of the original rock concert of 20 years past...any how he wants to ask the fruit to get back together for a reunion....the long and short of it is that they get together complete with, fragile egos, aging disappointments, past baggage and all the human foibles, that make this a memorable movie....Have they exhausted all the other alternatives? do they find wisdom? Ah! but you will have to watch the movie to find out...You don't have to be a rock and roll fan to love this movie any one can enjoy the humorous and bittersweet moments on the way to the conclusion.....endearing characters, good music and hilarious moments make this a good time spent.
PS. Bill Nightley's rendition of the aging lead singer is absolutely fabulous, there is a scene when he is at an AA meeting in Holland, (the meeting is conducted in Dutch) where suddenly realizes that it is really an over eaters meeting...one of the many humorous moments!
