Skunked

Greetings, As I read the blog about filling the bird feeders and feeding the squirrls I not could help but be reminded of my efforts to take care of our animal friends. There continues to be a faint reminder of this throughout my room. I thought I was doing a good deed by throwing dried corn cobs into the back yard at my new roomates home. They had been in a plastic bag on the back porch since fall. Well, needless to say it wasn't just the squirrls who were hungry. That night my dog Jupiter took off like a flash into the yard and came back just as quickly. His eyes wild and foaming at the mouth. The smell was horrendus. Not quite the impression of a "good dog" I wanted to give my new roomie. Mike was gracious about it all and produced a small can of V-8. It got us through the night along with alot of candle burning and smudging. I wondered what message skunk had for me. Attraction, distraction or time for a good through cleaning. I know one thing for sure, from now on, I will be only feeding the squirrls at the park down near the river.

Hi All, I too have a stinky story :) Roxy is a 9 lb Jack Russell Terrier who, by the way, has a birthday this week and will be 10 years old.
Roxy has developed a reputation of being a scrappy,"small but mighty" little canine terrorist. There was the time when she was staying overnight with Dennis and Maryann on Sunset Mountain, when her persistent barking woke up the family to a bear outside the screen door. Or the time she scared the German Shepard and chased him down the street. She was also well known in the dog park where when her tiny self was chase by far bigger dogs, she would spin around at top speed and in the air by there faces,(remember that is air borne for her) and snap at their noses!
Her skunk encounter began in Vermont. One night I had her out the front door on her retractable leash for her midnight bathroom visit. She had absolutely no interest in doing her business, her ears were at one hundred percent alert and every fiber of her little body was straining towards something in the dark. I hung on to the leash and pressed the button to shorten her tether as she was trying to take off as far as she could. Out of the darkness comes a tiny little creature with a big REPUTATION; Skunk, "oh no" I thought, this could be a "stinky" moment. The skunk came up to the step about a foot away from the gyrating dog and just looked at Rox the me, as if to say respect me and I will respect you. So I greeted her ( I felt like a lady) and sent her love and respect ( Rox kept wiggling on her very shortened leash) Madame skunk, bowed her little head ( very cute I might ad) and turned her back on us and slowly ambled away with the cutest little wiggle. I was amazed, how in the presence of the "mighty terrorist" she walked with such ease presence and might slowly! I guess it is true her REPUTATION preceded her and she could afford to be generous.....
Stay tuned for the next installment of this story and find out how Roxy got "Skunked"!

One weekend after Roxy's first Skunk encounter, I was leading the wisdom word teachings in Hyde Park, NY. It was some time in November. I left Roxy with a friend. While the friend was watching her, she saw a fluffy tailed critter and took off for a good chase. I guess Rox forgot about the REPUTATION of this black and white furry friend. So the furry teacher turned up her tail and let Rox have it in the face!
When I returned from my weekend there was a definite stinky oder....VERY POWERFUL!! Roxy had already had several baths with special skunk shampoo from the vet. Since that didn't work on the stinky scent, we tried tomato juice ( a whole 6 pack, baking soda, lots of different shampoos ( the baking soda seemed to work best) Any how the scent was so powerful just being in the house with the dog made your eyes tear...finally to sleep we locked roxy in the basement. Around 3 am I awoke from an exhausted sleep, to "You RAT, You little RAT!) Roxy had managed to dig a whole through the wall and sneak in to Lavender's room....needless to say her very stinky REPUTATION Preceded her, and woke Lavender up!! Roxy, I believe, has learned not to chase skunks, and in the process has earned quite a reputation! :)

Blessings in the light

I have always lived among four footed, furry friends - cats, until we added a dog in 1994. Eight yeas ago we were up to 5 kitties, the dog and two kids still home - a zoo of sorts. These days, we are empty-nesters with senior animals (still the dog and now two cats.) One of these kitties - 14 years, is not doing well and requires a great deal of TLC. She is aloof and squirmy and giving meds is challenging. With the vigilance, though, she is improving some and the other day, jumped into my lap - very atypical behaviour. Her eyes are brighter and she has perkier energy - such a little gift. I guess, Princess, is not ready to go anywhere just yet and we are enjoying her in a new way! I'm grateful for the animals in my life and the subtle lessons they have taught me....
